Summary

The first time I read Flowers in the Attic was the summer before entering 8th grade。 One of my friends told me there was this book I just had to read, the salaciousness of its contents dancing in her eyes。 I bought it at Waldenbooks (memories。。。😢), and was immediately hooked as I turned the pages of that mass-market paperback with the blue cover。 Reading it for the second time, the plot and all the grisly little details came flooding back。 I'll say this – V。C。 Andrews knows how to tell a sto The first time I read Flowers in the Attic was the summer before entering 8th grade。 One of my friends told me there was this book I just had to read, the salaciousness of its contents dancing in her eyes。 I bought it at Waldenbooks (memories。。。😢), and was immediately hooked as I turned the pages of that mass-market paperback with the blue cover。 Reading it for the second time, the plot and all the grisly little details came flooding back。 I'll say this – V。C。 Andrews knows how to tell a story, even when the problematic elements raise their ugly heads。 For that reason, my rating will stay the same。 And nostalgia。I also listened to the audiobook while I read, and Mena Suvari does a superb narration。Now headed to re-read the sequel, Petals on the Wind。 。。。more

Slow to start but a good readI thoroughly enjoyed this book, and was left feeling hallow at the end after the many twists and turns the book took。I had trouble getting into the book, as it had a monotonous and stretched rhythm, mimicking the slow passing of time in the attic。 However, after coming to terms with this slow crawl through the days, I was pulled into the pitiful and upsetting lives of these long neglected children。I ended up really empathising with the characters and their plight。 Wh Slow to start but a good readI thoroughly enjoyed this book, and was left feeling hallow at the end after the many twists and turns the book took。I had trouble getting into the book, as it had a monotonous and stretched rhythm, mimicking the slow passing of time in the attic。 However, after coming to terms with this slow crawl through the days, I was pulled into the pitiful and upsetting lives of these long neglected children。I ended up really empathising with the characters and their plight。 When they were betrayed I also felt that keenly。 My anger towards certain characters was palpable。An interesting and chilling read 。。。more

2。5/5 stars。I picked up this book after hearing of its notoriety。 I was curious about the weird aura of scandalous horror it had around it。 At first I despised the writing in general, and I maintain that the dialogue is absurdly written throughout, even abysmally bad in places。 About halfway through I did start to care enough about how it would end to merit finishing the book。 And damn。 Was not expecting THAT。 The level of betrayal is off the charts。After finishing this, I guess I’m glad I’ll ge 2。5/5 stars。I picked up this book after hearing of its notoriety。 I was curious about the weird aura of scandalous horror it had around it。 At first I despised the writing in general, and I maintain that the dialogue is absurdly written throughout, even abysmally bad in places。 About halfway through I did start to care enough about how it would end to merit finishing the book。 And damn。 Was not expecting THAT。 The level of betrayal is off the charts。After finishing this, I guess I’m glad I’ll get any references to it from now on, but I have zero desire to read any of the other books in the Dollanganger series。(Okay, well, I WAS interested enough to read the plot synopses on Wikipedia for the rest of the Dollanganger series and WOWOWOWOWOW 😱 that’s one heckuva soap opera saga! No regrets reading about it that way instead of reading the full books, there are so many other things I’d rather read the full versions of。 But dang if y’all want an absurdly melodramatic tale of family horror, look no further。) 。。。more

Ok, hear me out。 This is one of my faviourite books, and I want to tell you it's not a guilty pleasure。Look at the other books I've read, you'll see I'm not into chick-lit or trashy love stories, so please read on。。。I read this book as an older teen, and I continue to go back to it every few years。 Sometimes I read the whole saga, but usually it is just Flowers In The Attic。 Why? Because it is well written, has a unique story, and I found it to be believable。Please ignore/ avoid the crappy TV an Ok, hear me out。 This is one of my faviourite books, and I want to tell you it's not a guilty pleasure。Look at the other books I've read, you'll see I'm not into chick-lit or trashy love stories, so please read on。。。I read this book as an older teen, and I continue to go back to it every few years。 Sometimes I read the whole saga, but usually it is just Flowers In The Attic。 Why? Create the characters for yourself and go into it with an open mind。 It's one of those family dramas where you would love to be a fly on the wall and wonder what all the different members of the household are doing at the same time the main ation is taking place。The only criticism I would have is that (I believe) it is set in the 1960s, and I would have set it myself at the turn of the century or maybe 1920s -30s to get a full social impact。 Some of the behaviours of the younger characters would have been more 'expected' if it had been set a little earlier, but this doesn't take away from the story it's just one of those 'if I had written the book I would have made that creative choice'。Over all, Andrews does a great job at world creation and makes you question your own morals if you were placed in their situation。 。。。more

Contains mild spoilers!! There are so many things that are wrong in this book but I felt the least of them was the infamous incest。 The narrator sounded more mature and knowledgeable than a 12 year old, the characterization of the twins was off, and emotional state these kids were after 3 years in a locked attic wasn't very believable。 I'm sure anyone would have tried to escape after a year, or sooner。 What I found disturbing were the naked whipping, the reference of Chris and his mother's bosom Contains mild spoilers!! While I was reading this, I had these confusing thoughts about these cruel witches in the house。 Do people like that exist? Also can children survive in an attic for 3 years without suffering any mental trauma? Another surprising fact I learned from the reviews on GRs is that these books were part of the curriculum! That was shocking! Why would anyone want little children to read about incest? Nevertheless, I did enjoy this book and would like to know what happens to these kids。 。。。more

I would ideally give this a 3。5 star, but 4 might be a little much。 I had watched the movie a few times but the book, as usual, was way better。 The mother and grandmother and disturbing characters, some of the details are disturbing。 But a good book for its time。

Hard to read about the time the children spent in the attic。 I hated the part that Cathy felt she was also responsible for being raped。 (This idea needs to be changed in our society。) Dark story, Ok ending。

I learned about this book from Paperbacks from Hell。 Finally started to listen to an audiobook of it but just couldn't do it。 The dialogue is hideous - the terribly unrealistic depictions of children's thoughts and speech just take me out of the story。 And then the cop tells all the gruesome details of the father's death to the family as if that would ever happen。 I couldn't even get to the parts that everyone says are "so bad" because the writing was so bad。 I love dark books from this era, but I learned about this book from Paperbacks from Hell。 Finally started to listen to an audiobook of it but just couldn't do it。 The dialogue is hideous - the terribly unrealistic depictions of children's thoughts and speech just take me out of the story。 And then the cop tells all the gruesome details of the father's death to the family as if that would ever happen。 I couldn't even get to the parts that everyone says are "so bad" because the writing was so bad。 I love dark books from this era, but not this one。 。。。more
